One thing is clear when speaking to Jim about the history of Surepak; Family is key. From the early days of Jim working in the warehouse with his wife Judith in the office, to Jim’s brother Colin opening the Brisbane office, to his son Andrew being heavily involved in the business, the history of Surepak is wrapped in family.

“Both my father and brother had always been self-employed, and I had reached a point in my corporate career where the only way to continue to progress was to uproot my young family and move interstate or overseas with them, which wasn’t something I wanted to do. So I started looking at different business opportunities where I could work for myself and keep the family unit stable in Melbourne.”

A chance discussion of his self-professed ‘mid-career crisis’ over dinner with some friends is what set the wheels in motion for a future in plastics, though from a different approach to what was the norm for the time.

“One thing people don’t know about Surepak is that we entered the plastics industry from a recycling perspective. That discussion over dinner led to my being involved in a recycling business, and from there we branched out and started selling builders film and other industrial supplies, as well as the recyclable products.  Even back in the late 1980’s we could see that there was going to be a need for a better solution to the way we approached plastic use and recycling in Australia.”

It has carried through to today where we still aim to treat our staff as part of our family, and I think it shows. And I think a lot of our customers share the same values that we have.”
